Live report: 20th January 2011, CONCRETE KNIVES(FR) + SARAH W. PAPSUN(FR) + TROPHY WIFE(UK) at Flèche d'Or, Paris

The UK band Trophy Wife was the headliner of the concert, supported by the French bands Concrete Knives and Sarah W. Papsun.

Schedule at Flèche d'Or, Paris

The two French bands were actually very good, check out their songs! The venue was unusually very crowded on this Thursday night.

A five-piece band: a drummer/percussionnist, a guitar player, a bass player, a keyboard player doing back vocals for a female lead singer who danced on stage and with people in the audience. Joyful songs.

Trophy Wife(UK)

I came to the gig to see this promising four-piece band from Oxford. It was the 1st time the members played in Paris for this very recent project (which started about 7 months ago), because some of them have already played here in Paris in the very good tropical band Jonquil from Oxford that some of you from the UK might probably know. You don't have to mistake Trophy Wife from Oxford for an another American band with the same band name. Moreover, they just welcomed a new and 4th member who plays bass guitar. That night, they played a short but good set, including the songs "Take This Night", "Microlite", "The Quiet Earth", a new song called "White Horses", "The Book of Right-On" (Joanna Newsom cover) and an another new song as encore. Maybe the songs "High Windows" and "Spinalonga". The drummer had an impressive bunch of instruments including electronic stuff, percussion, tambourine and drums.
"The Book of Right-On" is really catchy, very different to the original version. This is actually the song that make them start Trophy Wife.

Moreover, the great James Yuill, from the same label Moshi Moshi, did a remix of their single "The Quiet Earth". They are often compared to Foals they supported a few times now, the last time was on last New Year's Eve at HMV Forum in London, alongside Caribou and Chad Valley.

I talked shortly with the very nice Jody (the lead singer) about bands we listen to. Mount Kimbie, New Order and Fleetwood Mac are part of his favorites.
The original trio (the three ones on the left: Ben, Kit and Jody) supported bands such as Toro Y Moi, Pet Moon, Crystal Fighters, We Have Band, Bombay Bicycle Club in the last months, but this new formation of four members will support the band Esben and The Witch next month in the UK. Give them support and go see them! They will probably come back to Paris in a couple of months, so stay tuned!
